Last week I posted about my white wall. Well, I’m here to report that the white wall has been covered. It is no longer white, but now has a beautiful patina backdrop that will be available for Holiday sessions this year.

As I was painting it, I started thinking about what patina is, what it means, and what causes it.

Because I’m a bit of a nerd, I did a little research into the definition of Patina.

My favorite definition is this:

“a surface appearance of something grown beautiful, especially with age or use.” But the third definition is wonderful too.

Both of these definitions relate directly to family photographs.

Picture this…

Your oldest child is leaving for college. Your younger child is in high school and is almost never home because of all the activities.  You see them at holiday breaks or for 20 minutes while they wolf down their dinner before going to finish their homework.

You think back to the days when they were little and they wanted to spend every minute with you. You walk through your house and see the photos of those little kiddos who are now grown up and so busy… and you stop.

You stare at the photos and you remember. You remember the moments of laughter and love. You don’t think about the meltdowns and having to pester them to eat their dinner or brush their teeth. You think of the happy moments. You cherish these photos, you don’t know what you would do without them.

They have grown more and more precious with every passing day. As your family ages, your memories age and become more beautiful. Your photos have their own patina. They have become more beautiful with age.

Our Patina backdrop is a wonderful metaphor for capturing these memories. They will only grow more beautiful over time.

In case you were wondering, here is the rest of the definition of Patina:

1a : a usually green film formed naturally on copper and bronze by long exposure or artificially (as by acids) and often valued aesthetically for its color

b : a surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use the beautiful patina of this antique table

2 : an appearance or aura that is derived from association, habit, or established character the criminal has acquired a patina of respectability by his friendship with well-known businessmen
